Mercedes: Starting problem with Mercedes E280 Auto 1999, mercedes e280, independent mechanic

Have been advised not to bump start auto.
Battery OK. When Key inserted all lights OK. but engine wont turn. Get 'clunk' sound. Possibly Starter motor jammed?
What course of action would you recommend?
Could you send detailed diagrams / photos of location / of parts with advice?

Sounds like a bad starter bearing or starter bendix. I have not diagrams for this vehicle. I would locate an independent mechanic to have a look. It will require lifting the vehicle and manually checking the terminals. I am not familiar with your design, but on my 420SEL, the removal process was quite a problem and required dropping some of the steering components and very long drive to access the top starter bolt.
