QUESTION: model 9/5 tdi 2006. black smoke exhaust. car goes ok. its in limp mode.no power going up hill could it be [ecr] vaule.

Answer
Nigel:
As noted in my profile, my hands-on experience is limited to the older 900s, so I can only offer non-specific comments oon your problem. Black smoke from the exhause is typically due to an overly rich mixture...the most likely cause would be an injector "stuck" in the open position Other causes could be anything that interfers with the fuel-air mixture such as a blocked air filter or possible catalytic converter(although the latter brings about other problems). a malfunctioning engine control unit or some of the sensors feeding it (temperature, throttle position sensor, etc.)  Hope this helps,
