Saab: inspection tim, saab service, saab dealer

Question
Hi Jerry - owner of 1996 900S convertible - purrs like a kitten.  question - last year I replaced the 02 sensor near catalytic converter - i am about to take it in for a nys inspection to a reputable Saab service/dealer - however, they are costly - the question is I have no warning lights coming on - would I have a check engine light or something that would appear if the catalytic converter was bad? Not to make excuses, but I am a woman on a fixed income and I love this car - so I need to prepare.  Also, ever since I have owned the car when I start the engine a "test brake lights" message appears but when I press the brake peddle the message clears - is that normal?  Thank you for your help.

Pat:
As noted in my profile, my hands on experience is limited to the older SAABS. However, I can respond in a general way. I don't see the need to go to a SAAB dealer for the inspection...any station so licensed will do. Also, if you have no "check-engine" light on, you should pass the emissions portion without a problem, and YES...if there is no light on, then the O2 sensor and catalytic converter system should be just fine!

As to the "test brake lights" observation, I cannot comment.

If it were me, I would go to a small private shop(ask some friends regarding recommendations if you need to) and let them do the inspection right off...and if they find something, THEN you can decide on a "fix". Also, if , in this process, you sense some suspicion of any work necessity exaggeration, feel free to contact me on this forum for further advice.
         Regards and good luck,
