Saab: oil leak 91 saab 900s 5 speed, head gasket failure, flexible printed circuit

Question
QUESTION: I have a oil leak coming form the gear shift rod going into the tranny. I also have one coming from where the clutch and head meet. What is the cause and how do i repair? Also I used your instructions on key cylinder removal hard but I did it thanks a ton

ANSWER: Jimmy:

I have never experienced a leak through the shifting rod. It is so high within the gearbox that oil usually does not reach that spot. Have you checked the oil level to make sure it is NOT overfilled? Is it possible that the leak originates ABOVE the rod (where crankcase and gearbox meet)? Can you determine if its engine or transmission oil?
Regarding the second question......Could you me more specific as to what point on the engine you mean since I cannot think of a single spot where the clutch and head come together? If it is what I think it is, it sounds like a head gasket failure; a not-too-difficult do it yourself project for the mechanically willing.

QUESTION: Thanks, Jerry it may be transmission oil coming where the gear rod goes in it leaks when I change gears and when the car stops.  Also what makes the SRS light come on?  The car has not been hit but the lights starts off blinking then stays on?  Any thoughts?

Answer
Jimmy:
The most likely cause of the SRS light is a broken "clockspring". This is a coiled flexible printed circuit located in the steering wheel hub that connects the airbag assembly to the rest of the car, allowing for the turning action of the wheel.
Its not to difficult to replace, but one must be VERY VERY CAREFUL to follow all instructions EXACTLY, lest the airbag go off accidently. In the main, this means removing the battery terminal for at least 1/2 hour befor working on it, at the least.
