Volkswagen: transmission problem, vaccuum pump, vacuum pump

Question
i have a 3sp automatic i think is a 68 model. when you crank car it wont to take off. it is in gear.  i jacked it up and took front cover off tran. and manual put it in neutral. the car will crank up and sit there for a few minutes and then pull it self back in gear. acts like maybe the vacuum pump isnt pulling enough vacuum at start up to me, and then when running builds up and pulls it in gear.  any suggests on what to  troubleshoot or do to find problem and fix and diagram for trans., and pump in case i have to rebuild them. thanks is there any way with vin#  i can find out what model exactly i have.

Answer
Hi Robert,

I would check a couple of things:

- Your transmission fluid level
- Do you hear the click of the control valve and hear the vaccuum pump actuate after you rev the engine, turn it off, put the key to 'on' and immediately activate the gearshift?
- Is the car easy to get into gear while running and it's just not going anywhere?

Look at these things first and let me know your findings, these details will help me see where to guide you.

Thanks,

Ron
