Volkswagen: Size of wheels, profile tyres, alloy wheel

I own a 1997 Golf 1.9 CL Mark 3... I wondering what is the size range of wheels I can fit to it without the need for changing anything with the suspension as i intend to purchase some alloy wheel soon.

you should be able to fit 17" wheels with low profile tyres and not have any problems. if you go upto 18" wheels, you may need spacers and possibly need the wheel arches rolling out a lttle. so 17" is my recomendation unless you want to spend alot of money. (tyres should be around 205/40/r17) as a guide, wider tyres ie 225/35/r17 are extremely expensive and may foul the bodywork or suspension.
