Volvo: 1996 850 GLT vs. 1994 940, wheel drive car, cat converter

Question
I'm looking into buying a used volvo - want a reliable and affordable car that looks good - i love the look of the mid 90's volvos.  Which would you recommend - the 1994 940 sedan or the 1996 850 GLT Sedan?  The 1994 940 is $3000 with 140k miles and needs $1000 of repairs - mainly the cat converter is broken.  The 1996 850 (with 150k miles) appears to be in great condition but I've heard that they can be unreliable.  I'll be driving the car across country with all my belongings.  Hope you can help... thank you.

Answer
Jill,
The 940 would be the better choice more that likely. It is a rear wheel drive car that is easier to work on and parts are less expensive. Jobs on the 940 tend to be less expensive. That why I drive a 940. Have the car checked out by a Volvo shop to see that all the normal repairs have been done. Get a list of the things that need repair and things that have been done, before you buy.
