Volvo: Check Engine Light/transmission fault flash, volvo repair, initial check

Question
Hello Jimmy,

I own a 97 s90(960) w/76,000 miles.  This is my 3rd volvo and have owned it since 99 when I purchased it with less then 14000 miles. Like all volvos that I have owned(also have a 99v70 w/<40,000, and had a 92 940 prior to s90)I have babied it, all services done by dealer, oil changed every 2500 miles, etc...Recently, like today, I was driving in my car and pulled over for a moment and got out of the car to look at something.  While getting out of the car I accidently bumped the inginition key. The car was running at the time.  I got back in the car and drove away, about I mile down the road I remembered that I bumped the key at which I reached to make sure it was in right postions(why I did this I dont know) the key was actually in the I position but I was driving, so I moved it to right to II at which the transmission fault light started to flash, and the check engine light came on.

So, I knew what I did and didn't think that the car had suffered any physical mechanical issues, so I stopped, turned ignition off, turned car on. I thought I would loos the warning lights, but did not. I did this two of three times and lost the transmission fault flash but could not loose the chenck engine light.  I disconnected the battery for a few minutes to clear the computer.  Now, when I turn the car on it still get the check engine light only, not inititaly but once it goes through it's initial check(about 5-10seconds).  Any Ideas?  I was thinking that the transmission fault is stored elsewhere and not resetable unless via tool vs. battery disconnect. Any help would be greatful. Thanks Stephen

Answer
Hello Stephen! There is a fault stored in the trans mission computer. (TCM). You will need a special tool to reset the fault code. It may go away on its own after a while, but it is best to reset it. Any dealer or Volvo repair specialist should be able to reset it for you.
