is this a good car? have you heard any bad things about it?

Well, now we go beyond advice to my own personal opinion.  It's difficult to say anything bad about the new Civic.  Honda has refined this model over the years into one of the best small cars on the market.  It does everything well, if not any one thing spectacularly (which seems to be Honda's hallmark).  The drawback is that Honda dealers tend to think their cars are incomparable, so there may not be much room for negotiating (hopefully, there are a number of aggressive dealers in your area offering competitive pricing).  If it's a compact you're looking for, there are other models you may want to consider.  The Ford Focus, properly equipped, is another fine car for the money.  I'd also look at the Mazda 3, or the VW Rabbit.  Both great driving cars, but the VW's reliability is questionable.  You REALLY have to love driving to put up with a European cars' problems.
