Tips on Buying Cars: buying a 1999 vw golf, vw golf, proper test

Question
hey ray..

i am planning on buying a used 1999 VW golf from a local dealer. i am not an expert on cars. but when i test drove the car, it did feel very good. the only problem is that the engine check light and airbag lights are on while driving and that scares the hell out of me. the carfax reports are clean though. the dealer said he would try seeing what the problem is. if not, he said he would come along with me to a MIDAS or NAPA (he doesnt have a "service station")and see if they could give a quote or fix the problem. can you please tell me if it is advisable to walk away no matter why these lights are on or to proceed further and diagnose the problems in case they are minor. I am getting a good deal on the vehicle and it fits perfectly in my budget. the car, except for a few interior glitches is in good shape.

Answer
Hi Ashwin
If you feel 100% with answer as to why these lights are on, go for it, on the other hand its a red flag.

The moment you take delivery your on your own and if vehicle has electric problems that could be nasty, personally I would look for something else.

Carfax is good but not 100% - as for you getting a good deal, if its to much below average price then there is a reason, when you say the car did feel good on the test drive lets make sure you did a proper test drive, go to this web page on my website  http://www.usedcartips.org/TESTDRI.html  its how I test drove vehicles for value and condition, I dont expect you to become an expert over night but pick up a few pointers will help you get value for your bucks
