Tips on Buying Cars: Just signed the papers on a new vehicle, now found other dealers offering 0%, rubber floor mats, subaru outback

Question
Hello!  I am hoping to see what if anything I can do about the posssible big mistake I feel that we made in buying a new car.  On Sunday, we signed the papers for a new Subaru Outback.  They didn't have the car we wanted, so they ended up finding it somewhere else, and are having it brought in (we have not taken the vehicle home yet).

I could give you a little more background info, but I am not sure if it would make a difference as to what I am trying to ask.  There was a discrepancy in options we were told the vehicle  had over the phone before coming in to signtthe papers (we had been in the previous day debating over buying new vs. new, so we knew what we wanted in the vehicle).  We learned right after signing the papers that it didn't have a few of the options they said it did on the phone (apparantly they weren't able to get the one that they quoted the price for over the phone), but didn't tell us that until after we signed the paperwork.  It wasn't anythimh too significant, but when we were up front with the mangager, and were trying to re-clarify the car (I wanted some paperwork with the options.  We weren't leaving with the car, so I wanted something tangible.  That is when we discovered the car we signed for didn't have all the options we were quoted.  I don't think it was necessariliy intentional on their part, but we had been going back and forth with the price quite a bit, not wanting to pay as much as they were asking, and these added options were what kind of persuaded us to go with the deal.  They did reluctantly tell us they would throw in the rubber floor mats they said the car had, but they also had said it had an extended arm rest and grocery nets for the back.

Like I said, not a big thing, but just enough to make you uneasy about your decision.  We also ended up going with the extended warranty that we were presented with at the last minute during signing.  We weren't told there was a deductible until we looked at the fine print when getting home.  Out fault, I know.

So...after all that rambling, here is my question! The car has not been delivered yet.  It is still on the other side of the state, and won't be here until this evening.  They are also running promotions on tv (other dealerships) for 0% fianancing and large rebates.  While we got the lowest rate they offered, it was nowhere near 0%.

Is there anyway to get out of the contract we signed since the car has not yet been delivered, or are we out of luck.  I am quite disappointed in myself, as I researched for weeks and weeks, didn't think I could find a better deal, and then I am seeing them pop up all over the place.  I don't know what I missed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Amanda!

Don't feel badly, you're in good company in the circumstances you've just described. I can tell you that in Massachusetts (where I am), once you sign a contract, you're DONE. Having said that, it does sound as if they, half innocently, half not, did a little switcheroo on you. I think that if you feel confident that there is a way to better your position (i.e. 0%, etc.) you might try playing hardball with them. You could try (all over the phone) to insist upon a NEW more advantageous  contract in lieu of cancelling the deal since that was NOT the car they told you that you were buying. You should put on your "game face" get tough, and see what it gets you! You can always cave if you don't get anywhere, but I think that you will. Good luck!
