Tips on Buying Cars: Buying a used car without title in hand/still has lien., private dealer, red flags

hi ray, basically im really considering buying a used car from a private dealer and ive spoke with him already. We came to an agreement on ME paying off the loan (11.5k and giving him the rest which is 3.5k, we came to an agreement on 15k for the car) and me taking the car, writing a written contract, and once he receives the pinkslip i would go back to pick it up. is there anything else i can do to make this a bulletproof deal?
