Used Cars: Volvo 240, volvo 240, good cars

Question
Hi--thanks for taking my question.

I've always liked the old 1992-93 Volvo 240 sedans. I'm thinking of buying one. (This is for general use around town. We have a newer, main car for the family.) I'm seeing a few out there--most of them around 150K miles. Am I nuts for doing that? Are they expensive to maintain/repair? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

Scott

Answer
The volvos in general are really good cars and for the most part do not require a lot of maintaining.  However, when they need worked on, they are a lot more expensive to fix as opposed to domestics.  Now, generally you can find a repair facility outside of a dealership, that can significantly reduce the amount of cash spent, you just have to make sure they are qualified in volvos.  If I were you, I would not be scared to purchase one with 150k miles on it, in fact, that would probably be deemed low mileage for that year model.  Just make sure that you have a mechanic, that you trust, check it over before purchase.
