Truck Repair: 88 K1500 manual 5-speed wear problem, gear transmissions, chevy k1500

Question
My '88 Chevy K1500 has a manual 5-speed tranny. When it's in gear, the stick has A LOT of play. And now it won't go into reverse...I think it's because there is so much play that it can't grab that gear all the way to the right and down. AAMCO said there is an aluminum plate in there that guides the shifter, and that plate is worn out. They said the replacement plate is steel and won't wear out.

1. What is that plate called so I can try to order it?

2. Is this a repair I can attempt on my own? I've had the tranny out twice for a new clutch and to replace a missing clutch fork ball stud retaining clip, so I'm a somewhat familiar with dropping the tranny/bellhousing/t-fer case.

3. Does the tranny have to be removed from the bellhousing for this fix or can I go in through the top once I get the tranny/bellhousing/t-fer case dropped?

Thanks for any help!

Answer
Hi Brent,
I would recommend that you don't order anything until you know what you need.
If I were to guess, I'd guess that someone spends quite a bit of time riding in the middle, and that person rests his, or her knee against the shift lever. Kinda feels good, but the fork that does the shifting into 5 and reverse, is being worn down by that constant pressure.
If that sounds like what might be happening, drop the tranny, remove the top cover, and repair or replace that fork.
If you don't have someone riding like that, it still might be in the same area, but I haven't been into one of those new venture gear transmissions, although I have several in my fleet.
If the floor of the truck has a removable cover on the hump, you may be able to do it without removing the tranny.
