What Are the Dangers of Changing Tires?

On occasion, you may have to deal with a flat tire that you have to change. Changing a flat tire is relatively simple; however, you must take precautions while changing your tire to ensure your safety and avoid dangers. There have been people who have suffered serious injuries, including death, while changing a tire.

Getting Hit by a Car

  • People have been run over by a car while changing a tire. Many times this is because the flat tire occurred on the highway and the car was not far enough in the shoulder lane to safely change the tire. The person under the car changing the tire cannot watch for oncoming traffic that gets too close. Also, it is even more dangerous to have feet hanging out from under the car on the side where oncoming traffic is approaching. This can also cause the person changing the tire to get injured by a car running over their legs. It is always best to have someone with you watching out for traffic while you are changing a tire.

Car Falling on You

  • If your car is not jacked up properly, it can fall on top of you. This could also happen if you do not have the proper jack or your jack is faulty and gives out.

Getting Run Over by the Car Your Changing

  • You can also get run over by the car that you are changing the tires on. This can happen if you are not changing your car on a level surface, which you should be. This can also happen if you do not have your car in park before you start changing the tire and a brace behind the rear wheel or wheel chocks to prevent the car from rolling over you.
