How to Prepare for Driving Test Exams in New Jersey

Taking a driving test can be stressful. Proper preparation will allow you to do your best and focus on the test rather than on paperwork. It will also ensure that you get to take the test at the time you desire. In New Jersey there are several rules about who can take the test and the car they may drive in. Knowing these rules will help your test day run smoothly. Practicing the commonly tested driving maneuvers will enhance your chances of passing.

Things You'll Need

  • Identification
  • Examination Permit
  • Licensed Driver
  • License Plate Decals
  • Registered vehicle with current inspection sticker and insurance card
  • Schedule your road test appointment. Log on to the New Jersey Department of Motor Vehicles website and schedule an initial road test. The test should last approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Once you have the road test appointment booked, confirm the date and time with a licensed driver who will accompany you. You must be accompanied by a licensed driver in order to take the test.

  • Practice all skills tested on the road test. In New Jersey these skills include driving in reverse, stopping at signs, nearing corners and intersections, stopping smoothly, sitting properly, steering, turning, parallel parking and yielding to right-of-way. The test may take place in an off-road site or on a public road coarse. Practice in both settings so that you will be comfortable. Always practice with a licensed adult.

  • Bring all appropriate materials with you. You will need the same identification you used to obtain a driver's permit, and a valid examination permit. If you are under 21, place red reflective decals on both plates of the vehicle you will be using to take the test. Make sure the vehicle you are using has a current inspection sticker and insurance card. The vehicle cannot have a center console unless the emergency brake is accessible from the passenger seat. A vehicle that does not meet these specifications will result in failure of the test.
