How to Unhook a Bumper Pull Hitch Trailer

One of the most common uses for a bumper pull hitch trailer is to transport horses. Failure to connect a hitch correctly can cause highway accidents and great injury. While equipment failure does occur with bumper pull hitches, it is rare--it is usually the result of people not paying attention to what they are doing. Not only is it important to concentrate on unhooking the trailer, but doing a safety check around the vehicle and trailer is just as important.

Things You'll Need

  • Truck
  • Trailer
  • Hairpin
  • Chains
  • Create a routine when it comes to unhooking your bumper pull hitch trailer. Pay attention to the process of disconnecting for safety's sake and to avoid damaging the trailer or truck bumper.

  • Grab and pull apart the trailer lights' electrical wire connectors. Wrap the wires around the hitch bar to keep them off the ground and dry.

  • Tilt the "S" hook on the truck bumper to the left or the right and lift up to remove the trailer hitch chains from the vehicle. Once the trailer and truck are disconnected wrap the chains around the trailer hitch bar.

  • Pull the hairpin clip from the hitch bar lock release lever and pull out the safety pin. The release lever is just a few inches behind the ball cup. Once the chains are unhooked, the hairpin removed and the safety pin pulled out on the side of the release lever, lift the lever up to unlock the trailer hitch.

  • Get in the cab of the truck and press on the gas pedal as you release the brake pedal. Feel for a tug on the truck. When you feel the tug, accelerate in a forward motion until the ball of the hitch slides out of the ball cup on the trailer hitch bar.

  • Walk to the back of the truck. Put the safety pin in the release lever and push the hairpin back into the hole to lock the release lever.

  • Set the trailer on blocks for long storage. If the trailer will be used again soon, rest the pull hitch bar on the ground.
