One purpose of your vehicle's side view mirrors is to help you see "blind spots" while you are driving and changing lanes. Failure to adjust your mirrors properly can result in an accident. One fact that many drivers don't know is that the side view mirrors and rear-view mirror should be used together. The mirrors complement each other. When the mirrors are correctly adjusted, you should be able to see a vehicle leave your rear-view mirror and immediately appear in your side view mirror.
Sit in the driver's seat. Adjust your seat so that it is in the exact position you require when you are driving.
Adjust your rear-view mirror so that you can clearly see what is behind your vehicle, without straining or moving your seat.
Locate the control switch for your side view mirrors. This will vary by vehicle. For many vehicles with automatic controls, the switch will be on the driver's side door. If you have manual controls, you might see a knob in the corner of the side view mirror. If you don't see any control buttons or knobs, you will likely have to push the mirrors with your hands. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual if you cannot locate the control switch.
Adjust the driver's side view mirror by moving the control switch. The mirror can be moved up, down, right and left. When the mirror is in a position that is suitable for you, your line of vision should continue from where it ended in the rear-view mirror. You should be able to see your rear driver's side tire in the driver's side view mirror.
Adjust the passenger side view mirror in the same manner. You should be able to see your rear passenger side tire in the side view mirror.
