How to Stop Ice From Sticking to Windshields

If you know a snow and ice storm is headed your direction, perhaps images of snowblowers and chipping ice off your car come to mind. Chipping away at ice that has formed on your windshield can be a dreadful experience. You can rid yourself of this task if you do some advance planning.

Things You'll Need

  • Old blanket
  • Winshield protectant spray
  • Shaving cream
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dry cloth
  • Cover your windshield with an old blanket when a snow or ice storm is headed to your neighborhood. When you're ready to drive your car, simply pull the blanket off your windshield.

  • Spray your windshield with an ice and snow protectant before the storm hits. You can purchase a protectant in the auto section of your local department store. The protectant contains chemicals that will not harm the glass or car but will keep ice from forming on the windshield.

  • Rub shaving cream on your car's windshield before the storm. Shaving cream will stick to your windshield, and its ingredients prohibit ice from forming. When you're ready to drive the car, wipe the windshield with room-temperature water and a clean cloth.

  • Before the storm arrives, dab rubbing alcohol onto a clean cloth and rub it on the windshield. This will cause all moisture to run downward, toward the hood.
