How to Get on a Payment Plan With the New York State DMV

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is the regulatory body for all motor vehicle operation in the state. The organization oversees driver's licensees, vehicle registrations and the processing of moving violations. In most cases, payment plans are not available for regular taxes and fees incurred with the registration of your vehicle. However, if you owe a fine to the Traffic Violations Bureau, it is possible to get on a payment plan. You may qualify for a payment plan only if you do not have a default conviction.

  • Partially pay the fine or schedule a Not Guilty hearing. If you believe you were issued a fine or ticket unfairly, it is possible to fight the case in court. If you win, you will not have to pay the fine. Hearings can be scheduled on the New York State DMV website or via mail. If the fine was issued fairly, pay what you are able and follow the next steps.

  • Pay at least 50 percent of the fine to the DMV Traffic Violations Bureau . In New York, if you do not pay off fines by a specified date, your license will be suspended. When you pay half the total, it will delay the suspension of your license by two weeks and give you the opportunity to sign up for a payment plan. Your license will be suspended if the amount owed is not paid in full by the end of the two weeks.

  • Await to be contacted by a DMV collection agent. After receiving a notice from the collection agent, contact him about a payment plan. If deemed eligible, you will not be required to pay the remaining balance on the fine in one payment. Instead, you will be given a schedule with the amount to pay each month until the balance of the fine reaches zero. Your license will remain suspended until you pay the fine back in full.
