How to Find Out the Value of Your Vehicle

Vehicles are expensive purchases. They quickly depreciate over time and as more miles are put on them. If you are hoping to sell your car for a fair price or are just wanting to find out how much your vehicle is worth, there are several steps you can take to accomplish this.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet connection
  • Visit the the Kelly Blue Book website at Kbb.com. With Kelly Blue Book you can find out the trade-in, private party and retail value of your used car. Visit Kbb.com, select the "year, make, and model" search link under "used cars," and then enter the correct information of your vehicle. Once you have filled out all of the information you will be given the option to enter the mileage and other amenities of your car and decide if you would like to find out the trade-in, private party or retail value of your car. Kelly Blue Book will give you values of your car based on its condition (see Reference 1).

  • Visit Edmunds.com. Edmunds.com is very similar to Kelly Blue Book except that with it you can also find consumer reviews for many of the vehicles you search, and with Edmund's you can select your zip code to find out the value of your vehicle in your area (see Reference 2). Enter the necessary information about your vehicle and wait for Edmunds.com to bring up the results.

  • Visit Autotrader.com to see what prices others are listing similar vehicles to yours in your area to find out a general value of your car.

  • Visit a local car dealership. If you wish to find out the trade-in value of your vehicle, visit a local car dealership and ask them how much they would give you for your car. Typically this quote will be much less than what you would expect; you should find out the true trade-in value of the vehicle from the Kelly Blue Book website before taking your car to a dealership. (Kelly Blue Book has become an industry standard for pricing.)
