How to Transfer an Iowa Salvage Title

In the state of Iowa, a salvage title is given to a vehicle that requires repairs that would cost over half of its market value prior to the damage. Salvage vehicles are usually taken by the insurance company after an accident or obtained by a vehicle recycler. They may also be brought in from out of state and have salvage titles in that state. Transferring an Iowa salvage title can be done either by assigning it to an approved entity or by applying for a regular title and registration.

Obtain a Salvage Title

  • Determine who you will be assigning the title to. In Iowa, salvage titles may be assigned to educational institutions, licensed car dealers, businesses or people who sell salvaged vehicles and/or parts, or licensed vehicle recyclers.

  • Submit your current salvage title and an application for title signed by the assignee to the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicles.

  • Receive an Iowa salvage title. The title will be sent to the new owner and will have "SALVAGE" stamped on it. A car dealer or licensed recycler may re-assign the title to any buyer.

Obtain a Regular Title for a Vehicle With an Iowa Salvage Title

  • Repair the vehicle to working condition.

  • Call 866-908-4636 to find the nearest place for a vehicle theft examination. Iowa peace officers perform vehicle theft examinations to check the repairs and confirm all documentation.

  • Obtain permission to drive the vehicle to and from the examination. The "Affidavit of Salvage Vehicle Repairs Form #441071" includes all the repairs that have been made to the vehicle. Download it from the Motor Vehicle Enforcement website or contact the local county treasurer or department performing the examination.

  • Drive the vehicle to the theft examination site.

  • Present the peace officer with the Iowa salvage title, an affidavit showing the repairs, a receipt for all replacement parts, and a $30 check or money order. If the vehicle passes the examination, you will receive a salvage theft examination certificate. Submit the certificate, salvage title, and all fees to your county treasurer.
