How to Pull the Rear Axle on a Yamaha Rhino

The Yamaha Rhino is a popular off-road vehicle, made to carry multiple people off the trail. These Rhinos are 4X4 vehicles, and they have an independent suspension with four individual axles. These axles have joints on each end which are protected by rubber boots. If the boots get damaged, then you will need to pull out the axle to repair it. Taking out one of the rear axles takes about 15 minutes to do.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Tire iron
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Hammer
  • Park the Rhino on a level surface and put wheel chocks around the front wheels. Lift the rear of the Rhino with the jack until the rear wheels are off the ground. Put jack stands under the chassis, then take off the rear wheels with the tire iron.

  • Unbolt the upper and lower control arm bolts connected to the rear knuckles with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Take off the dust cap on the center of the hub in the rear with the hammer.

  • Unbolt the axle nut behind the dust cap with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the hub and rear knuckle off of the axle.

  • Grip the axle with both hands. Pull the axle out of the rear differential using a jerking motion.
