How to Install a Steering Box on a Jeep CJ7

The steering box on a Jeep CJ7 is the connection between the steering column and the steering linkage. It's a hydraulically powered box that contains a gears that make this transition possible. If the gears should break down (as they can over time), then you can replace the steering box with a new one. Once the old one is removed from the frame, you next need to install a replacement steering box to the Jeep, which takes under an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Line wrench set
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Threadlocking compound
  • 3/8-inch torque wrench
  • Replacement steering box
  • Replacement steering box bracket
  • Lift the front of the Jeep with the jack and put jack stands under the frame. Apply threadlocking compound to the threads of the steering box bracket bolts. Install the steering box brackets onto the steering box with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and tighten down the bolts to 70 ft/lbs with the 3/8-inch torque wrench.

  • Guide the intermediate shaft located on the steering column under the hood into the end of the steering box. Apply the threadlocking compound to the steering box mounting bolts. Lift the steering box up into the frame and install the bolts and nuts to hold the box in place. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 55 ft/lbs with the 3/8-inch torque wrench.

  • Tighten down the mounting bolts on the intermediate shaft with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Torque the bolts down to 45 ft/lbs with the 3/8-inch torque wrench.

  • Install the pitman arm from the steering onto the steering box with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Torque the bolt to 185 ft/lbs with the 3/8-inch torque wrench.

  • Connect the hoses from the power steering pump to the steering box with a line wrench. Lower the Jeep off of the jack stands with the jack.
