How do I Install Sway Bar Bushing Links on a 1997 Chevy Blazer?

The sway bar bushing links mounted on a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer connect the sway bar that runs the width of the Blazer with the lower control arms. These links have bushings on both the side that bolts to the sway bar and to the lower control arm. If these bushings wear down, then the sway bar won't be able to do its job and you will notice a clanking noise in the suspension. To fix this, the sway bar bushing links need to be replaced, which can be done in less than 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Open-end wrench set
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Replacement sway bar bushing links
  • Set the parking brake and lift the front of the Blazer with the jack. Put jack stands under either the front crossmember or the frame rails. Lower the jack.

  • Locate the sway bar bushing end links on the lower control arms and take note of the orientation of the bushings on the end links. Unbolt the sway bar bushing links from the lower control arm with an open-end wrench and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Remove the sway bar bushing links from the suspension.

  • Install the replacement sway bar bushing links into the suspension, making sure that the bushings are oriented in the same position as the originals. Tighten the end links in place with an open-end wrench and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Lower the Blazer off of the jack stands with the jack.
