How to Remove the Oil Pump in a Duramax

The Duramax diesel engine is found in certain years of Chevrolet pickups. This engine has an oil pump that helps to move the oil throughout the engine. If this oil pump goes out, then the engine won't be lubricated properly and could cause damage to the engine. To fix the problem, you must remove the oil pump so that you can determine if the oil pump is the problem or if it is something else.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Drain pan
  • 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set
  • Raise the front of the truck using the jack. Set jack stands beneath the frame to support the weight of the vehicle. Remove the jack. Put the drain pan underneath the Duramax engine's oil pan.

  • Remove the bolt in the drain pan using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then empty the oil pan. Unbolt the oil pan from the bottom of the engine block using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets.

  • Unbolt the engine front cover at the bottom front section of the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the oil pump screen using the ratchet and remove the pump screen and o-ring seal.

  • Unbolt the crankshaft oil deflector nuts and remove the oil deflector using the ratchet. Unbolt the oil pump from the block using the ratchet and remove it from the vehicle.
