My Lexus GX470 Makes Clicking Sound & Won't Start

All cars share a common design and the sound of clicking when you try to start your vehicle regularly plagues drivers. The clicking sound means that the starter is not getting enough power or you have a problem with the stater itself. There are several reasons this can happen and it could mean an expensive repair is needed. However, your car battery could simply be a dead a jump-start could send you on your way.

  • Check the battery on your Lexus by putting the key in the ignition and turning on the windshield wipers. If the wipers do not move or move very slowly, then your battery has been drained. If the wipers and other electrical equipment work fine, such as the headlights, then your car has a bad starter.

  • Charge your battery and restart the car using jumper cables attached to the battery of another car. Allow your car engine to run for several minutes. Remove the jumper cables and test the electronics again. If the wipers are still slow, then your battery needs replaced or you have a problem with the car's alternator.

  • Take your battery to an auto parts store if you know it is older and needs to be replaced. Newer batteries are unlikely to fail, but old batteries regularly need replaced. Replacing the battery will allow it to hold a charge and start your car every time.

  • Contact your Lexus dealer or a mechanic to check your alternator if replacing the battery does not fix the starter. Without a functioning alternator, the battery will never charge and it will constantly be drained.
