How to Check the Fuel Pump in a 1999 Chevy Suburban

Signs of a fuel pump problem include an erratic engine idle, sudden stopping of the engine, problems when starting the vehicle in hot or cold weather and the engine rotating but not starting. All these symptoms are easily noticed, and even the most inexperienced mechanic can test a fuel pump.

Things You'll Need

  • Test light
  • Fuse
  • Relay
  • Fuel pump
  • Apply the parking brake.

  • Turn the ignition switch to the "On" position without starting the vehicle.

  • Listen for a "whirring" noise from the rear of the vehicle. If a "whirring" sound is heard the fuel pump is working. Check the fuel pressure.

Fuel Pump Fuse and Relay Check

  • Locate the fuel pump and relay fuse in the fuse box in the engine compartment.

  • Touch each end of the fuse and relay with the test light.

  • Replace the fuse/relay if the test light does not turn on when one or both ends of the relay are touched.

Fuel pump power

  • Lower the fuel tank.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump.

  • Insert the test light into the connector. Replace the fuel pump if power is present but the fuel pump does not work.
