How to Troubleshoot Thunderbird Convertible Top Systems

Ford's Thunderbird vehicles can be supplied with either a convertible top, or a removable top. The removable top is a hard-top that can be removed from the vehicle and stored. The convertible top is fabric, and uses a mechanism to retract it. Problems with the Thunderbird's convertible top can include problems with operation, controls, the tonneau cover, and storage. You can correct many of these problems by following some troubleshooting.

  • Place the Thunderbird's gear lever in the "Park" or "P" position if the convertible top won't raise or lower. The system won't work in any other gear position.

  • Allow the motor to cool down if you have raised and lowered the top several times in a row and the top won't move. The motor has overheated and caused a thermal breaker to open the circuit and shut the motor down. The system will reset itself after a few minutes.

  • Empty the convertible top storage compartment behind the seat of luggage, shopping, or other gear if the top won't retract. The top can't fit into the storage compartment properly if it's full of stuff.

  • Install the tonneau cover properly before driving if parts flap around in the wind. Push the boot to the rear and engage it under the upper back panel at the back and the quarter panel at the sides. Then fasten the snaps.

  • Allow the convertible top to warm in the sun if it won't pull down and latch after a long storage in the down position over winter. Latching will become easier over time and as the weather improves.
