Acura Tl 2002 Transmission Problems

Introduced in 1995, the Acura TL is a midsized four-door luxury sedan. The 2002 TL features a Type-S, 3.2-liter engine and is available in both four-speed and five-speed automatic transmission. Despite its Sports Shift technology, the TL's transmission is susceptible to failure.

Transmission Failure

  • MSN Auto indicates that the 2002 TL has occasional transmission failure, which may result in the transmission locking. A locked transmission can result in a serious accident and/or injury. The cost to replace the TL's transmission is estimated at $3,033 for parts and labor.

Recall

  • In April 2004, there was a recall on over one million affected 2002 TL automatic transmissions. If you have not received a recall notice, you can call your local Acura dealership to see if your vehicle is on the recall list.

Extended Warranty

  • As a result of the numerous cases of affected transmissions, Acura extended the factory warranty on the TL's transmission to seven years or 100,000 miles. Although the seven-year factory warranty has now expired, your 2002 TL may still be covered if its mileage in under 100,000 miles.
