The 2006 Sonata is a mid-size car sold by the Korean automaker Hyundai. The Sonata uses traditional halogen headlights with relays. The simplicity of the headlight system makes troubleshooting easy. Headlight malfunctions can usually be attributed to a few problems.
Turn the engine off and pop the hood. Locate and remove the headlight access cover in front of the headlight assembly.
Check the electrical module behind the headlight assembly for a loose connection. Pull the module out and correctly install it if the connection was loose. If the module appears damaged, it may need replacement.
Disconnect the electrical connector from behind the assembly. Remove the high and low beam bulbs and inspect them. Burnt-out bulbs are a frequent cause for headlight problems. A bulb's filament should be connected in the middle; if it is not, replace the bulb.
Start the vehicle and remove the fuse box cover on the driver's side of the engine bay. The headlight system does not use a fuse; instead, it uses a relay. Locate the high-beam relay (left side of fuse box) and the low-beam relay (right-side). The relays will be labeled.
Use your interior headlight control stalk to activate the high-beam setting. Check the lights. If the high-beam is working, but the low-beam is not, replace your low-beam relay. The relay can be removed and installed by hand.
