How to Check a Flashing Engine Light on a 2002 Honda Accord

Few experiences inspire as much fear as seeing the check engine light illuminate while driving. The warning light monitors many of the systems in your car and lights when an error occurs. The 2002 Honda Accord, like all cars built after 1996, uses the Onboard Diagnostic II (OBD II) system to help mechanics and car owners determine why the check engine light is lit. You can purchase an auto scan tool for approximately $100 and find out why your check engine light is on. In some cases, the car just needs a minor repair which you can perform yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Auto scan tool
  • Pen and paper
  • Place your car on a level surface, turn off the engine and set the parking brake.

  • Open the driver’s side door and locate the ODB II connector under the dashboard between the steering wheel and the door. The connector is small, rectangular and has several holes where the diagnostic device plugs in.

  • Connect the OBD II scanning device into the ODB II connector. Do not force the device into the connector, as you can easily damage the plug.

  • Turn the key on your car to the “Run” position, but do not turn on the car. Some scanning devices will turn on when you turn the key. Others have a manual power button.

  • Enter any of the information asked for by the scanning device. You will often need your vehicle identification number, the make and model of the car and the type of engine.

  • Press the “Scan” button on your device to search for trouble codes. Some models have a menu system that you need to scroll through and select “Scan”.

  • Write down the trouble codes shown by the scanner.

  • Turn off the ignition key and remove the scanner from the ODB II connector.

  • Search the Internet for the meaning of the trouble codes provided by the scan. Once you know what the codes mean, you can make the repair or take it to a mechanic.
