How to Clean a Pathfinder Mass Air Flow

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor on the Nissan Pathfinder measures air that comes into the fuel-injection systems of the SUV's engine. This sensor sends information back to the vehicle's Engine Control Unit, which in turn regulates fuel mass coming into the engine. Over time, dust particles can clog the mass air flow sensor. This in turn can cause the vehicle to idle roughly, sputter or stall. You can clean a clogged mass air flow sensor in a few steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Spray MAF cleaner
  • Remove the Pathfinder's negative battery cable with a wrench.

  • Locate the mass air flow sensor on the Pathfinder. It is typically located near the air filter, but can also be found near the fuel-injection system, depending on the year of the vehicle.

  • Use a screwdriver to remove the MAF sensor's retaining screws. Unplug the electric wiring harness on the back of the MAF sensor and lift it out.

  • Spray the sensor's wires and element with spray MAF cleaner. Gently clean the sensor with a soft brush if necessary, then wipe it clean with a rag.

  • Set the sensor back in place. Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor and replace the retaining screws.

  • Replace the Pathfinder's negative battery cable with the wrench.
