How to Replace a Oil Pressure Sensor on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee

Before the 1984 model year, Jeep attached the Cherokee name as a trim level of the Wagoneer. In 1984, Jeep released the Cherokee as the mid-sized SUV in their lineup. The 2000 Cherokee, which was strikingly similar to the 1984 Cherokee, came standard with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that produced 125 horsepower. This SUV had an optional 190-horsepower, 4.0-liter, six-cylinder engine. Both engines used an oil pressure sensor to keep track of how much pressure the oil pump created. Replacing the oil pressure sensor on either engine is the same.

Things You'll Need

  • Combination wrench
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Drain pan
  • Engine oil (amount depends on oil lost)
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, using a combination wrench. Set the cable aside to prevent accidental reconnection.

  • Raise the front of the Cherokee with a floor jack, and slide jack stands under the frame rails. Lower the Cherokee until only the stands support its weight.

  • Crawl beneath the SUV and remove the bolts securing the splash guard, if applicable, and pull the splash guard from under the Cherokee.

  • Locate the oil pressure sensor, the electrical component directly above the oil filter. Disconnect the wiring harness plugging into the sensor, by pulling up on the locking tabs and pulling the harness from the sensor.

  • Slide a drain pan under the pressure sensor and remove the sensor with a ratchet and deep-well socket.

  • Apply a thin coat of thread sealer on the threads of the new oil pressure sensor and reinstall it. Plug the wiring back into the oil pressure sensor. Reinstall the splash guard, if applicable, and tighten its bolts with a ratchet and socket.

  • Raise the Cherokee off of the jack stands, using a floor jack, and pull the stands from under the SUV. Lower the Jeep to the ground.

  • Check the oil level and add engine oil as needed.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery and tighten it with a combination wrench.
