The 2003 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition came equipped with a five-speed manual transmission driven by a 1.8-liter dual-overhead cam engine that produced 180 horsepower. The switch that turns on the backup or reverse lights is mounted on the transmission's side by the starter solenoid. When you shift your transmission into reverse, a lever activates the switch, turning on the backup lights. When this fails, it calls for replacing.
Park the car on a level surface and firmly set the emergency brake. Open the hood.
Locate the backup light switch next to the starter solenoid on the back of the transmission. Find the reverse light switch on the 2003 VW Jetta on the driver side close to the bulkhead. Press the locking clip on the electrical connector and pull the wiring connector straight off the switch.
Remove the reverse light switch by turning it counterclockwise with a wrench. Clean and check the O-ring for rips or tears and then roll the O-ring off the old switch and roll it onto the new switch. Replace the O-ring if needed.
Coat the threads of the new reverse light switch lightly with gear oil and thread it by hand into the opening, turning it clockwise until finger tight. Turn the switch clockwise with the wrench until you reach the end of its threads.
Reconnect the electrical wiring to the switch by pressing the wiring connector straight into the switch connector until you and hear a click and feel it seat into place, indicating the connectors are locked together. Close the hood.
Turn the ignition to "Run," without starting the engine and shift the transmission into reverse. Verify that the backup lights come on. Turn off the ignition.
