How to Replace Convertible Plastic Windows

Vinyl and plastic convertible windows need to be replaced once they become torn, discolored, or damaged in any other way. The good news is that the entire convertible top does not need to be replaced. Once you have the new plastic window replacement, gather the rest of your materials and begin the job.

Things You'll Need

  • Putty knife or plastic tool
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Soft cloth
  • Metal clip
  • Plastic window
  • Double sided tape (100MM)
  • Rubber cement
  • Paintbrush
  • Remove the convertible top by unhooking all of the hinges and snaps that hold it in place.

  • Remove the damaged plastic window. Use the putty knife or plastic tool to separate the convertible top material from the double sided tape that is holding the current window in place.

  • Take the black rubber bead off of the window. The new plastic window will have a bead attached for you to use.

  • Detach the metal clip that is also holding the window onto the convertible top, and then unzip the window. This will finally release the window so you can discard it.

  • Wipe away any lingering rubber cement from the top. Use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth.

  • Attach the new window by zipping it into place. You may need someone to help you hold the window in place while you begin to zip it. Take the metal clip that you removed earlier and snap it onto the window to hold it in place.

  • Add a few pieces of double sided tape to the area surrounding the metal clip, and then spread on a thin layer of metal cement. Allow everything to dry before reattaching the convertible top to the car.
