How to Bleed the Power Steering Pump in a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer

Chevrolet introduced the Trailblazer in 1999. The Trailblazer replaced the slightly smaller S-10 Blazer completely, in the 2003 model year. The 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer was equipped with the option of either a 4.2-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine, or a 5.3-liter V-6. The power steering units on the 2005 Trailblazer assist the driver in making turns with the steering wheel, as well as returning the wheels back to the straight position after turns have been completed.

Things You'll Need

  • Ignition key
  • 1-pint power steering fluid
  • Open the hood of the Trailblazer and locate the power steering fluid reservoir. Remove the cap on the power steering fluid reservoir.

  • Place the ignition key in the ignition and turn the engine of the Trailblazer on. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right until you cannot turn it any farther. You will notice that the power steering pump whines a little when you perform this step. Hold the steering wheel completely to the right for at least three seconds.

  • Turn the steering wheel completely to the left until you cannot turn it any farther. Hold the steering wheel all the way to the left for at least three seconds. Shut the Trailblazer engine off when you have completed this step. By turning the steering wheel to both of its extremities, you are increasing the pressure from the power steering pump through the entire system. The increased pressure will force fluid into places where air pockets are located, while simultaneously forcing air pockets up and out of the power steering system. This procedure only works with the power steering cap off.

  • Add power steering fluid to the power steering fluid reservoir until the fluid is at the "FULL" mark on the dipstick. Install the power steering fluid cap back onto the power steering fluid reservoir.
