How to Remove an Airbag From a Chrysler

The airbag on the steering wheel of a Chrysler is part of the steering wheel assembly that sits in the center of the steering wheel. The airbag is attached to a fuse in the fuse box that must be disconnected in order to remove the airbag from the vehicle safely. Removing the steering wheel airbag from the Chrysler is a job that you can do in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench
  • Fuse puller
  • Screwdriver
  • Torx bit
  • Socket wrench set
  • Unfasten the negative battery cable of the Chrysler's battery post with an open-end wrench to discharge current from the airbag before attempting to remove it. Wait about 30 minutes before removing the airbag.

  • Pull off the cover on the fuse box underneath the dashboard, between the steering column and the driver's side door. Remove the fuse for the steering wheel airbag in the fuse box with a fuse puller. The fuse box cover has a diagram of where to find the fuse for the airbag.

  • Remove the screws on the steering column cover underneath the column with a screwdriver and set the cover out of the way. Disconnect the green plastic safety catch on the inside of the column and remove the yellow plastic circuit switch from the connector post inside the steering column.

  • Loosen the four Torx screws on the backside of the steering wheel with a Torx bit and socket wrench. Take the Torx screws off the back of the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel /airbag assembly in the center of the steering wheel just enough to see the electrical wire connections on the back of the assembly.

  • Detach the electrical wiring connections on the back of the steering wheel assembly and remove the assembly from the Chrysler's interior compartment.
