How to Change the Lights on an Equinox

The lights on the Chevrolet Equinox make driving the vehicle safe. If any of the lights burn out on your Chevrolet Equinox, they should be replaced as soon as possible. In order to replace most lights on the Chevy Equinox, you will need a Phillips type screwdriver, a pair of clean gloves, and a replacement bulb. Changing any of the lights should take you no more than fifteen minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean gloves
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement bulb

Headlamps, Front Turn Signals, Side Markers and Parking Lamps

  • Turn off the Equinox's engine. Pull the hood releasing mechanism to open the hood. Put on the clean gloves.

  • Remove the center screw of the eight pushpins on the top of the cover of the radiator with a screwdriver. Then remove the pushpins. Pull away the radiator cover from the headlamp lens. Remove the three headlamp-assembly attachment screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the radiator cover toward you, and remove the headlamp assembly from the engine compartment. All four lamps are located on the headlamp assembly. The parking lamp is the top-most light; the side marker light is the smallest light; the turn signal lamp is the bottom outer light; and the headlight is the largest light.

  • Press the clip on the electrical-connector and remove it from the headlight. Rotate the retainer ring counterclockwise to remove it from the headlamp bulb. Pull the headlamp bulb out and install the new 9007-type bulb. Reattach the retaining ring and the electrical-connector. For all other bulbs, rotate their sockets counterclockwise and pull it out of the headlamp assembly. Pull the old bulb out and install the new bulbs. The front turn signals use 1156NA-type bulbs, the side markers use 168-type bulbs, and the parking lamps use 194NA-type bulbs. Reattach the sockets to the assembly.

  • Place the socket back into the assembly and reinstall the three retaining screws. Reattach the eight pushpins to the radiator cover and close the hood.

Tail Lights, Turn-Signal Lights, Stop Lights and Back-up Lights

  • Turn off the Equinox's engine and open the lift gate. Put on the clean gloves.

  • Remove the two tail-lamp screw covers, and use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws. Slide the tail lamp assembly out of the vehicle.

  • Rotate the desired bulb socket counterclockwise and remove it from the tail-lamp assembly. The top bulb is the turn signal; the bottom bulb is the back-up bulb; the middle inner bulb is the stop lamp; and the smaller middle bulb is the side marker bulb.

  • Remove the bulb from the socket and install a new bulb. The back-up lamps use 921-type bulbs, the rear side marker lamps use W5W-type bulbs, and the rear turn signal lamp and tail lamp both use 1157-type bulbs. Reattach the socket to the assembly.

  • Place the tail-lamp assembly back into the vehicle and reattach the two screws and the two tail-lamp screw covers. Close the lift gate.
