How to Change a Windstar Distributor Cap

The Windstar is a minivan that was produced by Ford from 1994 to 2003. The distributor cap is located under the hood near the rear of the engine compartment. It connects to the spark plugs via the spark plug wires and regulates when each plug receives a jolt of electricity. When the distributor cap wears out, the plugs will not fire correctly, resulting in decreased performance and stalling. The distributor cap should be changed every 60,000 miles or five years.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Park the minivan on a level surface and set the parking brake. Open the hood and support it with the hood prop. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Hold the new distributor cap above the old one and rotate it so they are aligned. Grasp the boot of one spark plug wire and pull straight up to remove it from the distributor cap. Place it on the new distributor cap in the same position and push down until it pops into place. Repeat until all of the wires are on the new distributor cap.

  • Place the new distributor cap on the engine block where it won't be in the way.

  • Remove the screws holding the distributor cap in place with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the distributor cap.

  • Place the new distributor cap on the distributor and secure the screws with a flat-head screwdriver. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Close the hood.
