How to Replace a 1990 Camry Fuel Pump

The Camry is a mid-sized automobile that is produced by the Toyota auto company. The Camry first rolled off the line in 1980 and as of 2010 is still in production. One of the basic repairs that your Camry may need from time to time is to repair or replace the fuel pump. The fuel pump is the part of the vehicle that helps distribute gasoline to the engine. This type of repair can be a very challenging project and is typically done by people who have at least some auto mechanic experience.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Flare wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Replacement fuel pump
  • Small jack
  • Detach the negative battery cable from the battery of the Camry. Lift up the backseat of the Camry and use a wrench to take out the bolt securing the seat in place. This allows you to gain access to the fuel pump service cover located under the seat.

  • Take a flathead screwdriver and use it to lift up the safety clutch located on the electric connector. Take the electric connector off of the fuel pump.

  • Use your flare wrench to loosen up the outlet line. Detach the outlet line from the Camry's fuel pump.

  • Take a Philips head screwdriver and loosen the fuel clamp located on the fuel return line. Disconnect the return line from the fuel pump.

  • Use a socket wrench to take out the bolts that connect the fuel pump assembly to the gas tank. Grab the Philips head screwdriver and use it to remove the screws that secure the fuel pump to the fuel pump assembly. Take out the fuel pump.

  • Unplug the electrical connector that is connected to the fuel pump assembly from the bottom of the fuel pump. Take your new fuel pump and place it in the assembly. Plug the electrical connector back in and use your Philips head screwdriver to reattach the pump to the assembly.

  • Attach the fuel pump assembly back to the gas tank using the bolts and wrench you used earlier. Replace the fuel pump cover and bolt the backseat back in place. Reconnect your Camry's battery.
