Torque Specifications for the Y-Block

Ford produced the Y-block series of engines from 1954 through 1964. The eight-cylinder engines were used in pickup trucks, passenger cars and in the Thunderbird. A total of five different engine displacements were available with the Y-block configuration: the 239, 256, 272, 292 and the 312. Despite all sharing the same block design, some differences do exist regarding their torque specifications.

Cylinder Head Bolts

  • The cylinder head torque specification for all Y-block engines is the same at between 65 and 75 feet per pounds of torque.

Main Bearing Bolts

  • Tighten the main bearing bolts to between 80 and 90 feet per pound of torque for the 239, 256 and 272 engines. Tighten the main bearing bolts to between 95 and 105 feet per pound of torque for the 292 and 312 engines.

Rod Bearing Nuts

  • Tighten each rod bearing nut to between 40 and 50 feet per pound of torque for all but the 292 engine. Tighten the 292's rod bearing nuts to between 45 and 50 feet per pound of torque.

Harmonic Balancer

  • The harmonic balancer's torque specification for all Y-block engines is the same at between 85 and 90 feet per pound of torque.

Intake Manifold

  • The intake manifold's torque specification for all Y-block engines is the same at 26 feet per pound of torque.

Exhaust Manifold

  • The exhaust manifold's torque specification for all Y-block engines is the same at 26 feet per pound of torque.
