The Ford F150 Won't Start

It's an awful feeling when you turn the key in the ignition of your Ford F150 and it won't start. Many things can prevent the truck's engine from engaging but not all of them would require a visit to a mechanic. Some troubleshooting ideas can be tried at home.

  • Think about the time you drove your truck before it quit starting. Warning signs could include that you recently had work done on the vehicle, you drove through a deep puddle, you heard knocking sounds, or you noticed smoke coming from the engine or tailpipe.

  • Listen to your truck when you turn the key. If it makes a clicking sound but won't turn over, it is likely a dead battery.

  • Check the fuel gauge. If it looks low, you may not have enough gas to start the truck.

  • Look at the other gauges on your dash. Make sure the "Check Engine" indicator is not on.

  • Check the fluids in your engine, including oil and antifreeze. Look under the truck for leaks.

  • Make sure that if you have an anti-theft device that it hasn't been triggered. Some of these devices are designed to prevent your truck from starting as a safety precaution.

  • Call for a tow truck if all else fails and have your truck taken to a professional.
