How to Replace a Jeep Muffler & Tailpipe

Replacing the tailpipe and muffler on your Jeep can be done yourself using simple tools. The muffler is located in line with the tailpipe. The muffler quiets the sound that comes from the engine. Whether you are replacing the muffler and tailpipe with stock equipment, or upgrading to a larger exhaust, the process in virtually the same. A new exhaust will increase the horsepower and response of your Jeep.

Things You'll Need

  • Hack saw
  • Anti seize
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Cut the muffler where it connects to the catalytic converter using a hack saw.

  • Pull the factory hanger bushings out of the mounts using your hands and remove the muffler and the tailpipe from the Jeep.

  • Place a small amount of anti seize to the threads of each new clamp.

  • Slide the end of the muffler into the output on the catalytic converter. Install the clamp and tighten it using a ratchet and socket.

  • Place the tailpipe into the output of the muffler and tighten the clamp using a ratchet and socket.

  • Thread the exhaust hanger on the tailpipe into the bushings located on the frame with your hands. This will hold the exhaust in place.
