How to Reset VATS on a Ford Focus

The vehicle anti-theft system, or VATS, on a Ford Focus consists of a smart key and transponder as well as an ignition-interrupt device. If the transponder does not recognize the smart key when the ignition tumbler is turned, the ignition-interrupt device will not allow the ignition circuit to close, preventing the Focus from starting. While this system seldom malfunctions, there are rare cases where you may find yourself needing to reset it. Anyone with a modicum of mechanical aptitude and a little common sense can reset the VATS on a Ford Focus.

Things You'll Need

  • Battery wrench
  • Open the hood on the Ford Focus.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal using the battery wrench. Secure the cable end away from the battery so it cannot inadvertently contact the battery.

  • Wait 15 minutes, then reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery, replacing the positive cable first. Close the hood when done.
