How to Replace a Heater Blower Motor on a 2005 Chevy Suburban

The 2005 Chevrolet Suburban was available in a 1/2 ton 1500 Series and a 3/4 ton 2500 Series. The 2005 Suburban 1500 was equipped with a 5.3-liter V-8 engine with an optional 5.3-liter Flex-Fuel V-8. The 2005 Suburban 2500 was equipped with a 6.0-liter V-8 and an optional 8.1-liter V-8. The blower motor on the 2005 Suburban controls the flow of air through the heating and ventilation system. Two types of blower motors were available for the 2005 Suburban; a Delphi and a Visteon. Removal and installation procedures differ for the two motors.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch-drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch-drive socket set
  • 3/8-inch-drive, inch-pounds torque wrench (optional)
  • New blower motor
  • New blower wheel retainer clip (Visteon motor)

Delphi Blower Motor Replacement

  • Open the hood on the Suburban. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, using a ratchet and socket. Tuck the cable to the side of the battery so there is no chance of accidental contact during this procedure.

  • Move to the passenger side of the Suburban. Open the passenger door, and kneel next to the passenger seat. Remove the sound insulation panel cover, if equipped, using a ratchet and socket to remove the screws. Pull the panel out from beneath the glove box area and set it out of your work area.

  • Remove the three blower motor insulator mounting screws, using a ratchet and socket. Remove the electrical connector from the blower motor by hand. Remove the blower motor insulator cover by hand.

  • Pull the locking tab downward with one hand. Turn the entire blower motor assembly counterclockwise to remove it from the ventilation system.

  • Install the new blower motor into the ventilation system. Turn the motor clockwise until the locking tab clicks and locks into place. Install the insulator cover over the blower motor, and tighten the screws snug with a ratchet and socket. Tighten the screws to 14 inch-pounds of torque, with a torque wrench and socket. Install the insulator panel and tighten the screws snug with a ratchet and socket.

  • Install the battery cable back onto the battery, and tighten it snug with a ratchet and socket.

Visteon Blower Motor Replacement

  • Open the hood on the Suburban. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, using a ratchet and socket. Tuck the cable to the side of the battery to ensure there is no chance of accidental contact during this procedure.

  • Move to the passenger side of the Suburban. Open the passenger door and kneel next to the passenger seat. Remove the sound insulation panel cover, if equipped, using a ratchet and socket to remove the screws. Pull the panel out from beneath the glove box area and set it out of your work area.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the blower motor. Remove the mounting screws from the blower motor, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the blower motor out of the ventilation system. Remove the retainer clip from the blower motor, if the new motor you purchased did not come with a new wheel. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the small clip, then pull the wheel from the old blower motor. Install the wheel onto the new blower motor, and install a new clip, if needed, using a screwdriver.

  • Install the new blower motor into the ventilation housing. Install the mounting screws and tighten them snug with a ratchet and socket. Tighten the screws to 18 inch-pounds with a torque wrench and socket. Attach the electrical connector to the new blower motor. Install the sound insulator panel beneath the glove box if equipped, and tighten the screws snug with your ratchet and socket.

  • Install the battery cable back onto the battery and tighten it snug with a ratchet and socket.
