How to Replace a Jetta Window Switch Cluster

Power windows are one of the great conveniences of modern cars. From time to time, the buttons and switch mechanisms that make those windows go up and down can break. Replacing the window switch cluster in a Jetta is a fairly straightforward home repair that most any driveway mechanic can accomplish in under an hour using nothing more complicated than a screwdriver.

Things You'll Need

  • Small flat-head screwdriver
  • Replacement window switch cluster
  • Open the car door with the switch cluster that needs to be replaced.

  • Use a small, flat-head screwdriver to gently pry the plastic trim cover from the door handle. This will provide access to the switch cluster.

  • Firmly squeeze the black tension clips located along the top and bottom edges of the switch cluster. This will release the switch cluster from the door handle trim piece.

  • Firmly squeeze the tension clips that hold the switch cluster wiring harness in place at the back of the switches themselves. Remove the switch cluster.

  • Clip the new switch cluster to the wiring harness.

  • Clip the new switch cluster into the door handle trim piece.

  • Snap the door handle back into position.
