How to Replace a Ford Truck Starter

Before you replace a Ford truck starter, check the charging system and the starter relay. Make sure the battery has 12.5 to 13.5 volts with the truck off. If not, then charge the battery and try to start the truck. If the truck starts, make sure the alternator is properly charging the battery. If the truck still does not start, check the starter relay and check for resistance in the starter circuit (see Resources for more on testing).

Things You'll Need

  • Set of sockets
  • Set of wrenches
  • Torque wrench
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and lay it aside, making sure it does not touch metal.

  • Remove the nut on the starter motor electrical connections, using a wrench, then pull the wires off the studs. Remove the starter motor bolts, then pull the starter off the block.

  • Line the starter up and insert the bolts. Thread them in a couple of threads to hold the starter in place. Tighten the bolts to 18 foot-pounds of torque. Reattach the electrical connections, then firmly tighten the nuts on the connections.

  • Reattach the negative battery cable.
