How to Reset the Oil Life in a Toyota

Late model Toyota cars and trucks are equipped with a monitor that alerts the driver when an oil change is due by turning on a maintenance reminder light on the dash. The on-board computer monitors mileage since the last time the light was reset and turns it on after 3,000 miles to remind the driver that maintenance is due. After the oil change is completed, the maintenance reminder light must be reset to turn it off until the next oil change is due.

  • Start with the ignition key in the "On" position but do not crank the engine. Push the "OD/TRIP" button until the odometer mileage is displayed. Turn the ignition key to the "Off" position.

  • Press and hold the "Reset" button. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position while holding down the "Reset" button.

  • Hold the "Reset" button until the oil change light flashes for two seconds then goes off. After the light goes off, crank the engine to verify that the light has been reset.
