How to Get Codes From a 1994 Chevy Camaro

If you want to perform your own repairs on your 1994 Chevrolet Camaro, you will need a way to diagnose the car's problems. The 94 Camaro has an On Board Diagnostic (OBD) system that is designed to give you information to help you locate the source of your car troubles. Obtaining information from the OBD system is a simple task, but it does require an expensive hand-held reader.

Things You'll Need

  • Handheld OBD-I reader
  • 1994 Chevy Camaro owners manual
  • Locate the 12 pin OBD-I reader port under the dashboard on the driver's side, just to the left of the steering column.

  • Plug the OBD-I reader cable into the port. The cable will only fit in one direction, so do not force it into the port if it appears not to fit.

  • Insert the key into the ignition and turn it backward one click.

  • Turn on the OBD-I reader. It will initialize and then scan the Camaro's computer to obtain diagnostic codes. The reader will then display these codes on its screen.

  • Look up the codes in your Camaro owner's manual to diagnose the car's problems.
